Soo…. I was browsing Netflix anime section the other night and noticed that a LOT of anime have a high star rating. I was thinking that I need to get back into anime. I decided on Berserk: The Egg of the King because Berserk is something I’ve heard of. Not recently, awhile ago I have. After watching this I guess is was a manga that an anime series got made and was based on and then came this trilogy of one and a half hour movies. Before I dig in though, its worth noting that like everything else I end up looking for on Netflix, they don’t have the entire series. They have part 1, but not 2 or 3. Very very annoying. It seems every time I goto netflix looking for something its not there. Honestly, if my wife didn’t force us to subscribe I wouldn’t even be using that service… thats a rant for another time. Its time to talk about Berserk.
This is the trailer of a movie the other J’s of this site and I went to see this last Wednesday. One J was saying its reviews weren’t doing so great. I have seen the previews and honestly I wasn’t expecting much. It looked more on par with the latest Clash of the Titans and those new age fantasy films. Those aren’t bad films but they are entertaining for the 2 hours and forgetable after that for the most part imo.
Now to get into it about this movie though. First and foremost, imo, two things need to be said. 1) The first twenty or so minutes aren’t good.(At least in mine and my friends opinions) 2) Yes, the actors aren’t Egyptian and yes, that makes the film feel a bit weird… BUT one J said the director(who is Egyptian?) said he did what had to be done to make this movie as least try to succeed. I mean .. no offense.. but who would see this if it was all Egyptians?? Not as many, thats who, and Hollywood is aware of that. Plus, they did get decent actors for their parts. On a side rant about the actors not being Egyptian, honestly, to me, some of the aesthics aren’t that Egyptian either. I swear I will try to stop typing Egyptian.. its starting to get to me. Seriously though, even the armor they wear looks more .. rag tag… Like different people were assembling different pieces of the armor.
The third thing I want to mention is the very first bit of the movie, the prolgoue story bit. Honestly, having said the first 20-30 minutes wasn’t good, they should have scraped it and re-wrote that. I’m not even sure they needed the prologue. It was interesting to watch but it really didn’t even do anyhting but mention names. You don’t really get a grasp of who Set and Horus and Osiris are(as in Christian terms.. being the Devil.. Jesus? and The Lord God I think? respectively.. ) Ra, is just the father of them all and seems to just be out there doing his own thing not minding them really.. like a good creator. Thats about all you really need to know going into the movie. Well that and the bit about the thief. Again, bad character intros. Felt very TV 90’s ish.
BUT – Having said those few things I have to say after the first 30 minutes and once the movie gets going and stops introducing people and lets the plot start going, things get good, again, in my opinion.
This isn’t a factual story, at all. Which I actually liked. A lot of times they try to keep this stuff to the real world Earth. Not this time. This story is its own universe. I even joked that I can’t get into this movie because the cities and monuments aren’t from here and aren’t still standing. It felt a bit like a fairy tale to me. Especially with the prologue. I’m not sure if thats what they were trying to pull off or not but thats how it felt to me after awhile.
They do a very good job with the story of the thief whos lost his love and finds a way to employ(and manipulate?) the gods to get her back. This guy .. I love this guy. From a D&D stand point I think this guy is a great thief and I just want to picture him a halfling or gnome, which is easy because in the movie the gods are twice as tall as mortals. Theres a few points in the movie where he just outright outsmarts the gods(especially the god of wisdom, whom I also love the character of). Hes using Horus who is using him back.
From a D&D plot perspective I thought the movie was great. Theres a lot of elements to steal. Its got temples with traps, the sphinx riddle battle, world devouring beasts, crazy ass gods who kill other gods, battles on top of 2000 foot high oblesiks, goes a bit into the realm of the dead, which I thought was an interesting place. I wanted to see more of Anubis and his world. Theres a good bit of exploring the world. Seeing different temples and fighting in different places. I can say this about the plot, that I want to .. borrow.. a few aspects from it. The basic run down is the Osiris is going to crown Horus the new king. Set doesn’t like that. Set ruins Osiris’ and Horus’ day. Set makes things bad, enslaving almost every human and starts hunting gods for a means that I personally like the idea of. Well thief steps in and helps Horus. They strike a deal. I always like when mortals can get to a level that they can make a bargain with a god. So now its on Horus and thief to find a way to take down Set. Thats the movie summed up for you without giving much, if anything, away.
I really enjoy movies, like this one, where the gods aren’t just these almighty supreme beings. The gods in this movie are flawed beings. They are people, and a family, just like humans, but they are just gods. When you see Horus again hes just moping in his temple and wants some wine to drink away his life. Another scene we see the goddess of love boozing it up, which I thought was funny actually. A god thats drunk. It just strikes a chord in me. Ra is the grandpa of them all. Osiris is the father to Horus and Set. They all have their flaws which play out during the movie. Boys looking for granpa’s approval and grandpa knows whats going on but doesn’t step in because its not really his business what happens down there. Like Ra says, “They have a journey.” Which gods and heros, and ultimately villians, do too. I like movies where the villain doesn’t want to destroy everything, just reshape it.
Its a bit like an older movie I saw where the villain wanted to destroy the banking system of the world and bring everyone to an equal level. This may be an extreme, but follow me here. Things would just be different. You can’t know how different because you may not be aware of the change after its done. Whoes to say anything in this world will last forever? Nothing will. There is logic in the crazy somewhere. Theres a lot more sadistic crazy than logic, and itd be a scary place, but like he said, it would just be different. Ra just wants to protect his creation… I just keep coming back to that pint when I think about this movie.
To wrap things up, I think everyone owes it to themselves to at least give this movie a shot. Don’t look at the reviews or metacric or rotten tomatoes. Think for yourself. Go see it then be the judge. They did take a bit of a chance on this movie and I have to respect that. It could have gone either way and judging the first 30 minutes, yeah, it didn’t look good, but you have to get beyond that and give it a shot. Its a decent flick. The best? No. Honestly though I walked away thinking to myself that I wanted to see this again after awhile. I rarely do that.
This is actually a well done and put together video. The songs not bad either. =)
I’m not sure I’d even call this a trailer. I think its more of a teaser but it looks good as a stand alone thing by itself. I wish I didn’t watch last season because I have to wait for the new season to see where it picks up. This is one reason I hate watching and reading things that are currently being made, you can’t just marathon watch from start to finish.
I usually wait until episode 6 is out then I just start devouring this show. This should be an interesting season. btw, you know who we didn’t see at all last season? The crippled kids team of paranormals. What have they been up to recently?? Probably Hodoring it up…
I want to share with you something I found sometime ago that I found as an inspiration to implement into a campaign or side quest or something. Take a watch…
I had to watch that a couple times in a row because its just a very well done video. Very stylized and all that.
Now this video gave me the thought of what if…. the PC’s rolled into town in the middle of this or at the beginning of this and had to interact with this town?
I was skeptical about this movoie going in and honestly even the trailer looks like all the movies just rehashed. Villian, followers, people standing up to him, blah blah blah… Makes me feel like I’ve seen it already. “Oh, how are the x-men going to pull this off?” Also the line the lady says about the bible stealing the idea from him… so fucking cliche imo…. BUT it still looks decent enough to see.
Gotta say I was wondering how they’d do his costume and think they did a good job. Sometimes, a few times, I’ve watche some movies and I think the villian makes more sense than the hero whoes just a symbol of the status quo. Sometimes change is better, sometimes it would be better to create a new world on the ashes of the last. They need more movies where the villians win. Could they make this a two parter where Apoc(I like to call him Apoc) wins and the xmen go hide then in part two they come back and whoop ass? Yeah, they could. Like the run of Age of Apocalypse comic run that Marvel did a long time ago. Then again, Marvel doesn’t own these and that tool Greg Millar has a hand in these somewhere. Soo.. not surprised really.
As a trailer alone I’d give it a solid B.
